REMEMBERING SAMMIE JOHNSON (LIVING CURRICULUM TEACHER)

As I sat there holding my friend’s hand, I knew her days here on earth were about to end. She was getting close to walking hand and hand with her Savior. Her life was complete and she was headed “Home.” I had told her before, but did she really, truly know how much she impacted my life? I don’t think she will ever fully realize the difference she made in my life, that because of her, I will never be the same.

Our relationship started with me calling her “Mrs. Johnson.” And while I don’t remember all the academic lessons she taught us, I do have a few memories of that Kindergarten year.  I could tell you that her hair was a reddish/blonde color and that she had a silver whistle she blew at recess. I remember her being firm, but also showing love to her class. Even after graduating from kindergarten, Mrs. Johnson always had a hug and a smile ready for her former student whenever I saw her in the hallways or at church.

I grew up, graduating from high school and then college, and found myself a teacher with a class of my own. As a new teacher, I was swept under her wing. She gave me some of her recipes and we started swapping books. We would talk about teaching and raising kids. I was wearing so many “hats” - wife, mom, teacher and sometimes life would just get overwhelming and busy. She always knew when to listen and when to offer some helpful “golden nugget” from her own experience and knowledge.

Then, the bump in the road happened, or should we say mountain. She was diagnosed with cancer. She didn’t know what the outcome would be. However, our talks turned into monthly dates. I looked forward to these times with this woman who had become my mentor and friend. Our times were filled with laughter, tears, listening and lots of talking and advice, usually with Cracker Barrel or Panera thrown in the mix. She would tell me about “old school” and how things were so different. She would brag on the Lord and cry over the sweet testimony she had to share with others. She would tell me how she was sharing her faith with neighbors and people she crossed paths with - what an example for me to see. We both praised the Lord when the cancer went into remission and we were able to enjoy a couple more years of friendship that seemed sweeter because of how precious her time was.

Now, I sit holding her hand while she peacefully sleeps. And I think of how I am holding the hand of a teacher, friend and sweet sister in Christ. Did she really know what a difference she made? I wonder. If she impacted me this way, just think of how many other children she made a difference with. Yes, she taught me my letters and how to read. She taught me numbers and many Bible stories. But what I remember most is not her teaching style or her pretty red hair. I remember what an impact she made on me and so many other children.  As I kissed her cheek for the last time, I smiled and thanked the Lord for bringing Mrs. Johnson into my life.  I will always be grateful.

Sincerely,

NCA Alumna

Values-bases Learning!

I am honored to work at a school that truly understands what values-based learning is all about. Not just teaching - learning. I truly believe that you can't teach values, but you surely can model them for others. Every single day. In every single way. Values like generosity, service, joy, gratitude, responsibility and fellowship go a long way in molding our souls and feeding our hearts.

Educating children today is a very difficult, but at the same time a very rewarding opportunity. What makes Northside so special is the relationships between the teacher and the students. At NCA the teachers are closely connected to their students and know them very well. Our teachers understand that the purpose of our school is to provide an educational experience while at the same time developing ministries to prepare students to serve and lead their homes, careers, churches, and communities.

We are proud of the values that our children are learning by the modeling that is provided by those around them at NCA. Our school is committed to excellence in all that it does.

Coffee with the Head of School

We are so grateful at Northside to have such dedicated parents that care so much about their children's school that they take the time to join us for our coffee meetings. We started our meeting this morning by addressing our "school culture" at NCA. We gave the parents at the meeting a better understanding of the type of school NCA is and the values we are trying to instill in our students.

This morning we had some great discussions on the following topics.
  • Communication and security:
    • Suggestions were made to put minutes together for those parents that cannot make the coffee.
    • We had open dialogue regarding the safety and security of our school.
    • Our parents made great suggestions on how we can better communicate regarding personal changes in our Kidzone program.
    • Parents expressed to us the importance of security for our after school program and for the safety of our children.
    • The parents shared how impressed and appreciative they are that Northside takes the security of their children seriously after seeing many of the changes the past two years.
    • Our parents are so thankful that we have a plan in place to address the concerns as we head into the school year.
    • Parents suggest new signage that can be put at our school entrances that help others now that this is a private campus.
    • General Conversation:
      • Parents addressed joggers on our campus and how we can support those church members that utilize our campus for health and safety purposes by providing some tags or shirts that will identify them as part of the NCA family.
      • Project 1-2-1 (ipad initiative) was mentioned and great conversation was had over the topic.
      • Parents asked about clubs, general direction, and the positive way the school communicates information.
    • Positive Comments:
      • Our parents thanked the administration for the efforts that they put into listening to our parents suggestions.
      • The parents gave compliments to the school for the many changes that have and continue to take place as we strive for excellence.
      • New school parents were thankful for the direction of the school culture and the emphasis on our core values.
      • Parents were encouraged about our current increase in enrollment and our financial situation.
      • Parents commented on the great word of mouth that they are hearing in the community about NCA.
Some of the action items that we will try to address are the following:
    • We will sit with our security committee and continue our conversation regarding the exterior of our campus and the safety of our students after school.
    • We will begin to price and find the best location to place signs at our entrances that help identify our campus as "private property".
    • We will communicate with our parents on video on our site, Facebook, or blog, the minutes from each coffee meeting. This will be another way to keep all of our parents informed.

Come join us at our next Coffee with the Head of School!
